Ship locks in Birsfelden
A staircase for ships
Navigation is possible where a river’s gradient does not exceed a certain level. Significant differences in elevation over short distances must be overcome using technical structures such as locks. In principle, locks are controllable water basins. Their water level can be adjusted to match both the water level of the upstream section (higher level) and that of the downstream section (lower level). In this way, ships are able to overcome differences in height by being raised or lowered within the lock chamber. The locks enable navigation between the port locations of Basel-Kleinhüningen, Birsfelden and Auhafen Muttenz. They are operated by the Birsfelden hydroelectric power station, which is located immediately adjacent to them. Construction of the power station was only permitted to begin in 1951 on the condition that the necessary ship locks were also built at the same time. Under the currently valid licence, Kraftwerk Birsfelden AG is obliged to ensure free navigation on the Rhine between Basel and Augst at all times. The control room, from which a single person operates both lock chambers, is equipped with cameras and a radar system, among other things. Depending on the water level, up to 18 million litres of water pass through the lock gates per passage.
