Liliput Type 142 Wigwam
Switzerland 1949
Land yacht
The Scottish doctor, Dr. William Gordon Stables was the first man to describe a pleasure trip in a “caravan”, a comfortably appointed horse-drawn vehicle. His “land yacht” is the oldest caravan in the modern sense.
A later start in Switzerland
The caravan only really came into its own in Switzerland in 1950. Previously, restrictive laws had limited the popularity of mobile homes: anything towed by a vehicle could be no more than 3 metres long, no wider than the towing vehicle and no heavier than 500 kg.
The Swiss solution
The Liliput Wigwam, created by O.F.A. Bally in Winterthur, was the first caravan to be built in Switzerland. Its dimensions reflect the tough legal restrictions. But these were revised in Spring 1950, and now the caravan could be up to 5.5 metres long, including the drawbar, and up to 2 metres wide. From then on, the Liliput seemed far too small.
