„Red Sand“ Lighthouse, D 1885
A marittime monument7
The “Red Sand“ Lighthouse is a symbol of Bremerhaven, in spite of the fact that it lies quite some distance from the German harbour city. It was also the last piece of Europe which many emigrants saw, and is thus a type of some counterpart to the American Statue of Liberty.
Lighthouses not only mark navigable waters for shipping, but their lights also serve as navigation aids to hep attain position fixes. As lighthouses are identified by their characteristic sequence of lights flashes – their so-called signal – this can be used to establish one’s own position in the sea by the coast
