Esprit VF II SC, Switzerland 1998
An unusual racing aircraft
The Swiss mechanical engineer Valentino Fry built this racing aircraft in his spare time between 1994 and 1998. The singleseat “Esprit” whose compact form is reminiscent of a cartoon film, is made of composite materials and was licensed in Switzerland as an experimental aircraft. It caused quite a stir among experts and helped its constructor to win numerous air race awards.
In winter 2001, the original 74 kW/100 hp Rolls-Royce/Continental engine was replaced by a more powerful, turbocharged Czech power unit, resulting in the aircraft name gaining the suffix SC (for “supercharged”). At the same time, the Esprit was equipped with a three-blade propeller instead of a twoblade one. After 320 flying hours, Valentino Fry deregistered his aircraft and donated it to the Swiss Museum of Transport, in order to dedicate himself to the construction of racing cars.
