Flush-deck steamer (1848-1904)
and saloon steamer (1905-1958)
The SS Rigi was designed as a cargo boat when it was commissioned in 1848. Its main duties consisted of transporting goods, postal items and animals between Flüelen and Lucerne on Lake Lucerne. The ship’s large deck had no superstructure apart from the wheel housings. While the cargo, including animals, was transported on the open deck, the hull was mainly reserved for passengers. The importance of passenger transport increased steadily as the 19th century drew to a close. Lucerne rose to become one of the best-known tourist destinations. With the aim of meeting the increasingly discerning needs of tourists, the SS Rigi was equipped with a saloon superstructure for first-class passengers. Installed in 1905, it was initially 7.5 m in length and was gradually extended over the ensuing years.
