Schilthorn Railway, two-way aerial railway with four sections, built 1967
The longest passenger aerial railway in the Alps
The concession for the building and operating of the aerial railway planned was granted on 23rd October 1961. With a total track length of 6966 m this is the longest passenger aerial railway in the Alps. Its four sections incorporated three intermediate stations and from the valley station Stechelberg (867 m above sea level) to the Schilthorn peak (2970 m a.s.l.) covers an altitude difference of 2102 m. In the middle of July 1967, with the section Birg – Schilthorn inspected and passed as operational the through service of this unique aerial railway began.
All four sections together can transport about 550 persons an hour in each direction. All tracks consist of two parallel supporting cables each, with a diameter of 40 or 42 mm. A total of 6 masts carry the supporting cables. Mast no 5, on a slope with a downward flow velocity of 1 cm a year, was set up 25 cm above the rail axis in order to ensure trouble-free operation for at least fifty years.
The most eye-catching sight of the Schilthorn railway is the revolving restaurant on the peak, opened in March 1969. From here the guest, without having to move from his seat, can enjoy in the course of one hour the total unique panorama.
