Shuttle railway on the Fürenalp, operated manually and with water-preponderance drive, built 1925
Example of a private small transport aerial railway
Isolated farmsteads or remote alpine pastures difficult to get a by normal means, are often supplied with a private aerial railway, as the construction of good access roads would be either impossible or uneconomical.
The valley station consist of a strutted scaffold, over which the two spiral supporting cables (diameter 10 mm) are led and held fast by means of ground anchors. The circulating cable (6 mm diameter) is wound around a rotary steering wheel which can be operated manually by a handwheel-drive over bevel cogwheels. The platforms can be loaded with containers producing water-preponderance for gravity drive. In this case, the aerial railway functions similarity to the water-preponderance drive cable railways. The manual drive is then only necessary for overcoming opposite slopes and places with small inclines.
For the safety of the platform passengers, a manually operated handbrake is mounted on the running gear with the two supporting cables, and it can be applied in case of emergency. Normally, however, its task would be carried out in the mountain station, on the brake with the black poplar wood blocks which is fitted to the rotary steering wheel. The transport platform suspended on chains from the running gear can be set in the inclination most suitable for the particular load or employment it is being used for at the time.
