Lugo gondola by De Giorgi, 1984
Birth of the modern gondola
Bernese coachbuilders De Giorgi AG launched their ultra modern Lugo gondola cabin in 1984. The basic design matured into a classic, which is still in use in the 21st century.
The prototype of the Lugo recalls the move from two/four-person gondolas to six/eight-person gondolas. The automatic sliding door mechanism represented a further step towards the full automation of the cableway. The monocable system used here scored not only for its flexible conveying capacity, but also – equipped as it was with bench seats and exterior ski racks – for comfort.
As a result, circulating gondola cableways provided increasing competition for conventional reversible aerial cableways with their large cabins offering standing room for upwards of 100 passengers, which by then had achieved full maturity.
