Borgward Isabella Coupé
Germany 1958
First coupé for the lady of the house
Carl Friedrich Wilhelm Borgward is one of the last company owners in the German automobile industry to give his products their character in person. The Isabella is created to his instructions and his wife drives the first coupé in the successful series of models.
Elegant and fast
Positioned between Mercedes and Opel, the Isabella from Bremen is tasteful, sporting and high quality. The coupé is particularly fascinating with its elegant sway of the hips. With 75 hp, the TS version of the Isabella is as fast as the Porsche 356.
The end of a life’s work
A thin financial cushion, models marketed too early, a decline in exports, stubbornness, an excursion into building helicopters, neglected investment and, not least, the influence of the media and politics are fatal for Borgward The company goes into liquidation in 1963. All the creditors are satisfied, however. Borgward does not outlive his life’s work and dies of a heart attack in 1963.
