between 1900 and 1931
The picture is a section of an unknown original photo. It shows a by then older Eduard Spelterini. He is standing in a balloon during the preparations for launch, wearing a suit and tie and a captain’s hat. Spelterini lived from 1852 to 1931 and was the first Swiss balloon pioneer. Between 1880 and 1931 he made around 500 balloon flights, carrying 1237 passengers. In the course of these, he made remarkable aerial photographs of Switzerland and other countries including Germany, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, Egypt, France, Italy, Poland, Russia, Turkey and South Africa.
Bequeathed to the private collection of Walter Dollfus, donated by Walter Dollfus, Zurich.
