1914-1919
Dübendorf as the cradle of military aviation
Georges Legagneux taking off on a Blériot monoplane on 20 October and the aviation festival held from 22 to 25 October 1910 marked the first pages in the eventful history of aviation in Dübendorf.
The purchase of observation aircraft using national donated funds for the Swiss Army did not materialise due to the outbreak of war, and the nine pilots had to make do with eight aircraft requisitioned partly from the National Exhibition in Bern. On 13 December 1914, the aviation division was moved from Bern to Dübendorf. In 1915, the first military pilot and observer school was established under the guidance of chief flying instructor Oskar Bider. This comprised an entire generation of aviation pioneers.
The interest in Dübendorf would however have remained low, had Arnold Isler, the former commander of the air force troops and later director of the Swiss Federal Office of Aviation, not already set up the first regular airmail service with passenger transport between Dübendorf, Bern, Lausanne and Geneva in 1919.
