GFK
Max Horlacher founded his fibreglass plastic manufacturing business in 1962. Well-known since the 1950s, this plastic allowed the production of light but robust structures. Horlacher made a name for himself as a manufacturer of light vehicles and cowling parts for tram cars.
Leaving solar cells at home
The Horlacher is one of the first solar cars to travel without solar cells. After the first Tour de Sol in 1985, a race for solar cars from Romanshorn to Geneva, it was apparent that it was advantageous to generate solar electricity in stationary sites and store it in the network. That way, the drivers could fill up with the corresponding amount of electricity at whichever socket was convenient.
Hotel vehicle
The Hotel du Lac in Interlaken uses this unusual vehicle as a luggage transporter and advertising vehicle. It has covered more than 25,000 kilometres in around 18 years and proves the usefulness of the concept for short journeys.
