Icaro 2000 Laminar MRx
World record hang glider by Manfred Ruhmer
Around 1960, a flexible wing in the form of fabric stretched between rods was developed by Francis Rogalla for the return of US space capsules. Although the design proved unsuccessful as an alternative to the parachute, waterskiers were quick to spot its potential and made use of the triangular sail to lift themselves into the air. Before long, the hang glider was also being used for towed and foot launches on land.
In 1971, the Italian Alfio Caronti became the first European to take off from a mountain. His company “Icaro 2000“ has been producing hang gliders since 1973, among them the Laminar MRx. The frame of this competition glider consists of ultra-lightweight aluminium tubes from Alu Menziken.
The hang glider on display was used by the Austrian Icaro developer and factory pilot Manfred Ruhmer to set a world distance record of 700.6 km in Texas on 17 July 2001. Mike Barber (USA) later surpassed this benchmark with a Moyes Litespeed, but only by less than one per cent. Therefore, according to the competition rules, Ruhmer’s record still stands.
