The Winterthur foundry Sulzer built its first diesel engine in collaboration with Rudolf Diesel in 1898. In the subsequent years, the company developed into a global leader for large marine diesel engines. Multilevel marine engines of this type form the backbone of world trade right up to the present day, 90 percent of which is carried on large cargo ships.
