Saurer marine engine, Switzerland around 1910
Petrol engine for marine applications with water cooling and compressed air starter
Commencing 1876, Niklaus Otto’s four-stroke design heralded a new dawn for the internal combustion engine. Otto recognised that compressing the gas mixture increased performance to a marked degree.
The mid-19th century saw the new-fangled kerosene lamp prevail: one of the by-products of kerosene distillation was petrol (or ligroin as it was first called). Using ligroin, and subject to some modifications, the gas engine (powered by town gas) transcended the intermediate stage of the kerosene engine to become a petrol engine.
From 1907 onwards, Saurer marine engines were clearly based on type AM petrol engines from the automotive industry, not least because petrol had become much cheaper than kerosene. Marinisation is the term used for the redesign of drive, cooling and exhaust components of an industrial or automotive engine for use in a marine environment.
