Gas cylinder belonging to Count Zeppelin, around 1900
Found during a dive in Lake Constance in 2010
Various sources confirm that Count Zeppelin and Eduard Spelterini shared their technical ballooning expertise and went flying together. It was even quite common for the two to help each other out with the occasional gas cylinder, although this sometimes proved costly and rather troublesome. After one of Spelterini’s trips was called off in the summer of 1901, for example, the managers of the oxygen and hydrogen plant in Lucerne threatened to retain 216 cylinders which they were storing but which belonged to Count Zeppelin as security for a gas delivery Spelterini had failed to pay for. In the end, Count Zeppelin agreed to take responsibility for the cylinders that had already been filled. On 17 and 18 September 1901, Spelterini successfully completed his third Alpine flight and was finally able to use the gas cylinders the Count had made available once again.
