Biotope – an oasis of contemplation
The inspiration for this biotope comes from Hans Erni’s idea to offer the visitors of the Swiss Museum of Transport a green oasis in which they can reflect on the world and the history of technology and mobility. The site is as much a symbiosis of nature and architecture as it is of economy and ecology.
It is also a reminder that this area known as “Brüelmoos” was once a reed-covered marsh until well into the 20th century.
The first biotope was inaugurated in 1979, at the same time as the Hans Erni Museum. An extensive renovation of the site took place in 2011/12. The pond was enlarged, the sculpture park regrouped and enriched by the ceramic mural “The Ages of Life”. A stop for the garden railway was also constructed.
The reconstruction was made possible thanks to a generous contribution from the Hans Erni Foundation.
