Description

Direktions-Wohnwagen Nr. 29, vom Zirkus Knie, Holz, weiss bemalt, blau gerahmte und blaue Rollläden; blau-roter Knie-Schriftzug. Das Fahrgestell wurde später modernisiert; der Wagen hatte ursprünglich Holzräder. Verwendung: Der Wohnwagen war in Gebrauch bei Nationalzirkus Knie von 1919 bis ca. 1974 und wurde von der Direktion und insbesondere Margrit Knie-Lippuner (1897–1974), verheiratet mit Friedrich Knie (1884–1941), verwendet. Gemäss mündlicher Überlieferung der Familie Knie (mdl. Auskunft von KNIE-Archivar Chris Krengel, 26.03.2019) stammt der Wohnwagen von der Tunnelbaustelle des Gotthardscheiteltunnels (Eröffnung 1882). Schon in den 1870er-Jahren soll der Unternehmer Louis Favre diesen Wagen beim Bau des Gotthard-Eisenbahntunnels genutzt haben. Vermutung 26.03.2019/che: Falls der Wagen wirklich von der Gotthard-Baustelle stammt, wurde er vielleicht für den Wiederaufbau der Knie-Arena nach dem Deutsch-Französischen Krieg (1870/71) als Occasion-Wagen nach 1882 von der Gotthardbaustelle gekauft.

Director’s trailer and meeting place for illustrious guests Trailer no. 29 of the Swiss National Circus Knie, in service 1919 - ca. 1974 This trailer served as an apartment for circus director Friedrich Knie and his wife Margrit. Their sons Fredy sr. and Rolf sr., born in 1920 and 1921 respectively, grew up in there. The lounge in the middle, complete with pull-out table for eight, is connected to the master bedroom in the front and the children's area in the back. Following the death of her husband in 1941, Margrit Knie-Lippuner remained in the trailer until late into old age and received prominent visitors such as Audrey Hepburn and Charlie Chaplin there. Back in the 1870s, the entrepreneur Louis Favre had used this trailer while working on the Gotthard railway tunnel. The chassis has been modernised. Masterpiece of logistics by the Swiss National Circus Every year from March to November, the Swiss National Circus Knie tours about 30 different venues throughout the country. The way the circus moves from site to site is a master class in efficient, rapid logistics: 1,400 tonnes of infrastructure, including ticket office and equipment trailers and tractors, are loaded onto two freight trains each up to 450 metres in length. Around 100 workers and a great deal of muscle power are needed to install the entire infrastructure, which occupies some 30,000 square metres. Marking the 100th anniversary of the Swiss National Circus, on display here is Margrit Knie-Lippuner’s (1897-1974) historic caravan no. 29 on a flat railway wagon. This was where the grandmother of Fredy Knie jr. and Rolf Knie jr. received prominent guests such as Charlie Chaplin. Accompanying the caravan are a large model of the entire circus complex and reproductions of posters that Hans Erni created for Knie. Original drafts and posters by the Lucerne artist can be seen in the Hans Erni Museum, which is here in the grounds of the Museum of Transport.
