High-speed sea-going ferries
Swedish ferry company Stena Line operates numerous sea-going ferries in Scandinavia, the Baltic, the UK and Ireland. Founded in 1962, Stena Line is now one of the world’s largest ferry operators. 2015 saw its 34 vessels carry more than seven million passengers and 1.5 million vehicles on 22 routes.
The HSS 1500 Stena Explorer can take up to 1,500 passengers and 375 vehicles. Modern sea-going catamarans can travel at speeds of up to 40 knots (74 km/h). They can operate in waves up to five metres in height. The pump-jet propulsion system with its 360-degree steerable nozzles allows the bulky vessel to quickly turn on its axis when in harbour. Thanks to its four vehicle access points and interior deck organisation, the ferry is similarly quick to load and unload.
