Turboméca Artouste IIIB helicopter engine, France 1961 Turboshaft engines: trademark annular combustor Founded in France in 1938, Turboméca started out manufacturing compressors and exhaust gas turbochargers. Its turboshaft engines Orédon (160 HP) and Artouste (220 HP) emerged in 1947. They were followed in 1948 by the world’s smallest turbojet engine, the Piméné (see the N-20 Arbalète aircraft in this hall). By 1994 Turboméca had produced some 29,000 engines, with a further 15,000 manufactured under licence by third parties. The trademark characteristics of all these compact gas turbines are their lateral air inlets and annular combustors instead of individual combustion chambers. The fuel is evenly sprayed into the combustor via a rapidly rotating perforated hollow shaft.
