Steepest funicular railway
The third generation of funicular railway between the mouth of the Muota valley in Canton Schwyz and Stoos will, when completed in 2018, follow a straight line up the flank of the mountain direct to the centre of Stoos village. The funicular is unique from a railway engineering perspective for two reasons: its record gradient of 110 percent, and the automatic levelling of its passenger compartments. Regardless of whether the train is tackling the steepest gradient or stopped at the station on the flat, the drum-like compartments remain horizontal.
