Einstein visits the ISS
ESA’s Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) is an unmanned, expendable cargo spacecraft designed to provide the International Space Station ISS with supplies. It is the heaviest payload ever carried by an Ariane 5 rocket (20 tonnes), and it can autonomously dock to the space station. A total of five ATVs are launched between 2004 and 2014. Among these, the ATV-4, launched on 5 June 2013, is named Albert Einstein as proposed by Switzerland. The Thermal Control Unit (TCU) is the ATV’s only equipment in operation during the launch phase with the task to manage temperature control, batteries as well as solar panels and antenna boom deployment. This particular model is identical to those assembled on the ATV, but, foreseen as a spare unit, it has never been used. The TCU equipment, manufactured by Syderal in Canton Bern, is an example of the many low-profile contributions made by the Swiss industry to space transportation.
