Versatile training aircraft
The Swiss Trainer is a two-seater all-metal aircraft used for training pilots, general travel and acrobatics, and aerotowing gliders. It was developed by Max Daetwyler AG in Bleienbach, Canton Bern. Amongst its particular characteristics is the fact that it is modular: the five main components in the wings can be exchanged between the left and right wings, as the elevators, rudder, ailerons and flaps use the same part nine times.
Also somewhat unusual for a small aircraft is the use of carbon fibre reinforced plastic and titanium, and the fact that many parts are machined from aluminium. The Swiss Trainer can withstand g-forces of +6 g / -3 g.
The prototype on display had its maiden flight in 1983. The definitive aircraft received its airworthiness certificate from the Swiss authorities in 1992. All the rights in the aircraft were sold to Malaysia in 1993, where it was manufactured under the name SME Aero Tiga for the country’s air force and that of Indonesia.
