A Swiss in space Claude Nicollier space memorabilia Claude Nicollier is the first and so far the only Swiss astronaut. Born in Vevey in 1944, Nicollier underwent trainings as a military and airline pilot, and 1975 completed astrophysics studies. Working as a scientist with the ESA, he applied successfully for the rigorous and lengthy training as an astronaut. Between 1992 and 1999, as a part of four space flights, Claude Nicollier spent 42 days in space. On his first mission (STS-46) it was his responsibility to send the EURECA research platform, today displayed in the Swiss Museum of Transport, out into space. As a part of his fourth mission (STS-103) he undertook a space walk lasting for over eight hours, in the course of which he installed a new central computer in the Hubble telescope. Also on board the space shuttle with him were the souvenirs exhibited here, which Claude Nicollier presented to the Swiss Museum of Transport during a visit in November 2000.
