The link between Lake Zurich's left and right banks
Since entering service in 1933, the boats of the Zürichsee-Fähre Horgen-Meilen AG ferry company have provided a “floating bridge” service between the two shores of Lake Zurich. The ferry Schwan soon proved too small to cope with the increase in motor vehicles in the post-war period. The number of cars and lorries transported more than doubled, from 121,000 in 1970 to 246,000 in 1977. Tourism and regional commuter and factory transport were the main contributors to this rise. The launch of the new boat in 1979 saw the ferry company offer a quarter-hour service at peak morning and evening times: named “Meilen” after the municipality on the right bank, it was ceremoniously christened with a local Räuschling wine. The coat-of-arms was sponsored by the municipality.
