Hans Erni Foundation, Donation Post CH AG
In 2019 the Hans Erni-Foundation has been given to four monumental wall carpets as a donation by Post Schweiz AG. Hans Erni designed these in 1969/70 on commission by the PTT (Company for Post, Telephone and Telegraph) for the entrance hall at the domicile of the general management in Bern. The carpets – each 260 x 850 cm – titled Der Brief (The Letter), Die Luftpost (The Air Mail), Die Satelliten (the Satellites) und Die Monteure (The Mechanics) have been created by the German company Ewald Kröner, Solingen-Ohligs. In the wall carpets Hans Erni transfomed the as well ordinary as complex procedures of postage and air mail, telecommunication via satellites and maintanance in brightly coloured, allegorical images: Thus in the Satellites three female figures with masks float around a globe.
The reduction to a few plane shapes and a web of white lines as well as only two or three tones per carpet demand the viewer to intensely immerse him- or herself in the depiction full of luminosity and dynamics.
