Garrett Steam Roller
Richard Garrett & Sons 1911
Steam roller belonging to the Canton of Bern
In order to construct and maintain its roads, in 1911, the Canton of Bern purchased a steam roller from Great Britain. Between 1848 and 1931, Garrett & Sons built mobile steam engines and self-propelled vehicles such as tractors, trucks and rollers. With the rollers, the heavy weight and low speed of the steam drive had only benefits and no disadvantages. In the United Kingdom, a country with rich coal reserves, steam traction was for many years an alternative to the petrol or diesel engine for other road vehicles on account of the lower fuel costs. Our Garrett steam roller served the Canton of Bern for 30 years. It continued in use with a road-building company until 1963.
