The first electrical company to build locomotives was the Oerlikon Engineering Works. Its early pioneering constructions were based on further developments of the rod transmission used in steam locomotives. The Ae 3/6 II that were put into operation after 1924 had elevated, big traction motors. Their rod transmission was able to drive fast trains at speeds up to 100 km/h.
