Freight trains on the route over the Gotthard
Of the Alpine countries, Switzerland has the highest proportion of transalpine rail freight traffic. According to the Federal Transport Office, in 2014 the volume of freight transported across the Swiss Alps rose to 67.3 percent of the total tonnage of 38,714. Transalpine freight will increasingly be shifted to rail. Key to this are the piggyback/rolling highway rail freight services provided by the Swiss Federal Railways through the Gotthard and the BLS railway company on the Lötschberg/Simplon axis.
